‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ – Nelson Mandela
This famous quote by Nelson Mandela came alive on 27 July 2018, at least in part, at the handing over of a new library facility to Maris Stella Primary School in Oshabeni, along the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal.
The day was full of activity and smiling faces, as learners, teachers, officials and staff members of Rossmin and JT Ross Property Group gathered together to celebrate and pack the shelves full of library books.
Rossmin and JT Ross Property Group launched a book drive and began construction of the library at the beginning of 2018 to establish a welcoming place in the school where learners can use the books and improve their reading skills.
Aside from the official ribbon cutting ceremony to open the library, a programme filled with poetry, dancing and story telling entertained all in attendance. Doug Ross spoke of the importance of the project to everyone involved, and gratitude at being able to contribute towards the wonderful work that Maris Stella Primary School has been doing within the community.
Mr Mbhele from the Ugu District School Library Services also addressed the attendees and gave thanks and gratitude towards the gesture, wishing propsperity for all involved in the project and ongoing contributions to schools in Oshabeni.
Maris Stella School Principal Mr Mqadi said in his speech, “The desks, kitchen counters and other elements which Rossmin have provided have been appreciated, but the most precious resource is the library, especially over the month of July, Nelson Mandela’s birthday.”
“We extend our gratitude to Rossmin and JT Ross on behalf of the school and the community.”
Maris Stella School plan to hold a ‘readathon’ in a few weeks time, already putting the library books to good use.
